A never-ending coastline
Just one figure will tell you a lot: 250 kilometres of ocean coastline! Aquitaine has quite simply Europe’s biggest beach of fine sand. Added to this are the 500 kilometres of shores alongside the lakes and estuaries.
Nautical sports, seaside resorts, naturism...
Imagine all the things you can do in this huge leisure area, how many sports you can practise –
surfing and sailing, of course, but equally cycling, with a massive network of
cycling tracks.
If, on the other hand, you would rather do nothing at all, the fine sand
of the Atlantic coast is ideal for relaxing on, either in the
traditional way or naturist style. Similarly, there are plenty of professionals specialised
in relaxation and well-being to take care of you in the many thalassotherapy centres in Aquitaine.
This vast coastline is also home to a great many boating harbours and seaside resorts, from the beaches of the Médoc in the north to those of the Basque Coast on the Spanish border, via the shores of the Landes region.
Of course, all these sites are to be found in a remarkably
well-protected natural environment, with
highly diverse plant and animal life. Several nature reserves can be visited (
Le Teich Ornithological Park in the Bay of Arcachon, Marais d’Orx Nature
Reserve in the southern Landes…); in fact the large number of these reserves
is one of the features of this multifaceted coastline.
Other special features? The almost straight, vertical line formed by the
Atlantic coast as it heads southwards from the Pointe de Grave to Spain; the
presence of huge dunes along most of the shoreline, including the highest in
Europe, the Dune du Pilat (104 metres) which looks over the
Bay of Arcachon; and the big lakes just a few miles from the ocean.
Aquitaine Oceanside is also a way of life, with its festivities, its trades, its crafts, its
gastronomy. Something for everybody!

Region: Aquitaine
Departement: Landes
Locality: Cote d'Argent,Seignosse les Bourdaines
Seignosse has two centers,
Seignosse Bourg (town centre, which is 4-5 kms away from the beach) and
Seignosse Plage (the beach). The Village of Seignosse is typical of the old
Landes coastal villages, picturesque, quaint and with the village church,
the mairie, a few bars, 2 hotels and small lanes with
scattered typical Landes colombage farmhouse
architecture, and on the outskirts of this, some developments of new
houses. Nothing different then you may ask? and the answer would be yes. Two
very large Lakes exist just to the North of the Village which makes all the
difference, the "Etang Noir" (Black pond or lake) and the very much larger "Etang
Blanc" (White lake, why the names? don't ask, I haven't established or
received a sensible answer yet), all surrounded with the Landes natural pine
forests (very tranquil, calm & relaxing). Hidden down the lanes surrounding
the lakes and nestling in the pine trees, are a few very isolated Landes
style Restaurants with views over the lakes.
Between the Etang Noir & the Village is a large Sports Centre with several
activities (Pelote Basque, 6 Tennis Courts & arranged Cycling Tours, some
short, some long, around the area (this area of the Landes has especially
concerned itself with the cyclist. Adjacent to all main roads from Capbreton
to Moliets, they have constructed independent cycle roads for the safety of
all)) and between the lakes is an Equestrian Centre (Pony Club, which
arranges regular promenades into the Forest for the avid Horseman (or woman)
on Horse back).
Seignosse Plage is a vast area of apartments (picture below right) with the
centre at Penon Plage, where you will find Bars, Restaurants, a cinema
(showing films in French, of course) a disco and the brand new Water Park.
All kept in impeccable trim, with what must be an army of gardeners (it
reminds me and has the appearance of a large Alpine ski resort, with the
snow replaced with very fine white sand). The coast line has immense beaches
(deep & long) & enormous sand dunes, enough space for all.
Between the village and plage is the most immaculate Golf Course ever
imagined or constructed with lakes & ponds creating hazards for the most
discerning golfer, with the most beautiful modern Landes style houses
nestling between the pine trees and the fairways of the
Golf Course.
3 kms South are the towns of Hossegor & Capbreton (with more Beaches,
Casinos, and another 18 hole Golf Course and Marinas etc.)
The atlantic coast, 126 kilometers of beaches, dunes and forest. The atlantic ocean, a gigantic mass of water rocked by the waves and the tides, the dunes, a fragile relief in motion, result of an extraordinary history, a protected nature, the forest, at the origin of an exceptional human adventure which shaped the girondan coast line, the beaches, a fantastic ground for sports, pleasure and relaxation.

PINK CIRCLE
Length : 3 800 m - Time : 1 hour walk
Start behind the Holiday Centre AGREOU VACANCES BLEUES. It goes through the coastal forest (called conservation forest) to join the Chemin des Casernes, then arrives to the CD 79. At this point, possibility to go into the green circle or to join the starting point.
GREEN CIRCLE
Length : 4 550 m - Time : 1.30 hour walk
Start on the road CD 79. The path wanders peacefully through the woods and suddenly climbs
up a peak culminating at a 65 m height, at a triangulation stone from which there is an astounding
view over both the forest and the sea. The path goes back down to the valley and turns west.
ORANGE CIRCLE
Length : 5 500 m - Time : 1.45 hour walk.
Start facing the picnic area at the crossroads between CD 79 and Lake Avenue (D89). The path winds around hills to follow the soother slopes. On top of dunes typical Landes shooting stands are to be noted (Palombières). The forest is superb with imposing trees and the luxuriant fragrance of its undergrowth. What a silence ! What a peace…
BLUE CIRCLE
Length : 7 800 m - Time : 2.30 hour walk
Start from the Sport Hall car park in Seignosse bourg. The path starts out between various wood cuttings soon converted into seedlings, which give a view on some tasks of forestry, in particular on the alternate lumbering and replanting operations. Furthermore these uncovered areas give a better account of the structural complexity of the seaside dunes, as well as of the tremendous wind labouring which set them up. Pine-Tree planting settled the dunes and dried up the marshes ; yet swamps and water points can still be found.
YELLOW CIRCLE
Length : 8 000 m - Time : 2 h 35 de promenade.
It leaves from the path running along the gendarmerie in Seignosse-Bourg (avenue du Clos de Belittre). This wide path goes deep into the large forest. About halfway, the path gets more undulating. Through hillocks and dales, the walker will admire the golfplayers in one of the most spectacular places (hole n° 11). The path goes around a big shooting stand and the walker can go back along the ridges.
RED CIRCLE
Length : 9 400 m - Time : 3 hour walk.
Start from the Sport Hall car park in Seignosse bourg. The path goes along the Etang Noir natural
reserve (1 550 m long, 150 m wide, 4 m deep with a thick coat of fluid slime ; 435 plant
species, 310 animal species), then it leaves D. 337 at the CCAS holiday village into D 189 (Louis
de Bourmont road) along the Etang Blanc to finally draw a wide curve in the woods. A beautiful
view point passed the restaurant " Les Roseaux ". From there, one can return to the Etang
Blanc or stay underwood and go back to the village through hillocks and dales.
